A Family Perspective: The healing of the woman and the child in today’s gospel is a reminder we are all wounded.  We retreat to those we love looking for acceptance, listening, understanding, and support.  Families must be healing communities where Jesus is present in our care for one another.

Abortion Industry Exposed!

For years we have been told that legal abortions were necessary for the health and well-being of the mother. It is a lie. Dr. Bernard Nathanson, co-founder of the National Abortion Rights Action League, who later became a Christian pro-life activist, admitted that his group blatantly lied about the number of women dying from illegal abortions.

The truth is only a small percentage (less than one-tenth of 1 percent by some counts) of the 1.3 million abortions in the United States each year are to save the mother's life. Instead statistics suggest that 85 percent of all abortions are performed as a means of birth control and are three times more likely to be by a woman on Medicaid. Family planning and abortion clinics in the United States are a $2 billion a year industry with a 1.3 percent growth over five years, with 40 percent of all the country's abortions being performed at Planned Parenthood.

Abortion clinics, by and large, are seedy, dirty, nefarious profit centers that don't care a lick about the woman or her rights. They are all about turning a quick buck. Just look at the recent cases of Dr. Kermit Gosnell in Philadelphia or Dr. Douglas Karpen in Houston whose depraved actions are just too disgusting to describe in this family bulletin. Another clinic threw remains on its roof to avoid hazardous waste removal fees. The list of abusive practices goes on and on.

Fortunately, slowly but surely, the dirty secrets are being exposed to the public. It's about time!

Supreme Court Decision

On Tuesday, June 26, the Supreme Court of the United States announced their decision in NIFLA v. Becerra. The case is a challenge to the "Reproductive FACT Act" which the state of California established in 2015.  This law requires pro-life crisis pregnancy centers to inform clients about free or low-cost abortion services.

NIFLA (National Institute of Family and Life Advocates) has been fighting this good fight in courts ever since, and this past week we are grateful to say free speech lives!

In a 5-4 decision, the justices have rightly supported the freedom of speech of over 200 pro-life pregnancy centers and medical clinics in California, so they can continue to help women choose life without being forced to post a state-sponsored message of abortion.

Our local community pregnancy centers thank you for your prayers and for following this case over the last three years. They hope that we celebrate with them as they rejoice in this victory for life!

The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates is an American 501 charitable organization that is a member of the National Pro-Life Religious Council.  NIFLA is a public interest law firm that gives legal counsel and training to pregnancy centers across the country.  The group will now take on similar laws in Hawaii and Illinois.
